Punk rock is typically considered as a fringe genre but it made its way into mainstream media through its association with the American punk scene in both Los Angeles and New York City. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, largely due to their politicized lyrics and aggressive musical style, punk rock developed as a form of social protest, against then-president Jimmy Carter’s policies on nuclear weapons and nuclear power in particular.
